Transferable Skills

10/23/2017

When I first began doing my motivational speaking back in 2008 to juvenile offenders I would often get asked how was I able to transfer "Non-Marketable" skills to business and entrepreneurship. The fact that they actually believed that the things they learned in the streets would not be applicable in a business or professional setting is in fact a myth and one that I believed for quite some time. That belief paralyzed me mentally until I went to community college and learned that everyone starts somewhere and skills and experiences can be applied to several industries. When I would survey the crowd to find out what they knew how to do it would range and from taggers to car thief's to burglary and what I would tell them next would absolutely shock them. I would go to tell them how those skills can be transferred into a potential business for example:
  • Car Thieves are also Car Security experts on how to protect it
  • Burglary Suspects are also Home Security Experts
  • Drug Dealers are Great Salesmen and Supply Chain Managers
  • Taggers are Great Artist and/or Architects

and there are other examples for everything that you think is a waste of a skill.  One of the best exercises that assisted me in doing a skills audit was when my undergraduate professor Dr. Newman made us do a 25 page resume in his professional sales course, yes you heard me right 25 page resume, yikes! He wanted you to list every job or responsibility that you have had since you can remember, which I found that if you do it everyday you will not only complete the 25 pages, but exceed it. So if you are wondering if you have the skills for a certain job and/or industry please do a 25 page audit and do it daily until it is filled.

As a former Drug Dealer and business school graduate I know that I have a unique skill set and advantage over any of my competitors even the Harvard and Princeton graduates, as like Jay-Z said "They only graduated from one school".  Stay tuned for my "Drug Dealer to Businessman" video series coming soon, where I will be sharing my experiences and tips on how I went from being a 6 figure Drug Dealer to a 6 figure online businessman so please subscribe to the channel.

Put Some "Respek"(Respect) on My Inbox

As marketers we sometimes feel like because we have someones information i.e., e-mail and/or a mobile number we feel like we can message them when "we" feel like it with whatever message we are pushing at that time. My inbox is important to me and I like most love receiving messages, however I don't like wasting my attention and/or time and somethings in your inbox can do both. What is an inbox? I can be:
  • E-mail
  • Text Messages
  • Facebook Messenger
  • Instagram Messenger
  • Link In Mail/Messages
  • Comments
I recently have the opportunity to read Tim Wu's "The Attention Merchants: The Epic Scramble to Get Inside Our Heads" and what I found was that our attention is worth quite a bit of money so I am very careful about what I pay attention to as I understand the value. In spite of the resistance clever marketers have figured out ways to manipulate that attention similar to the way (if you have ever driven in the Fashion District in Los Angeles ) parking attendants whip (popping sound)  a flag to get your attention as you are driving by which can cause an accident, but he doesn't care as long as he has the potential to earn the $10 for parking. Lame marketers are really no different, below are a few examples of marketer not respecting the inbox:
  • Misleading Subject-lines
  • Friends(Undercover Marketers) sends you offers on FB Messenger
  • When you go "Live" and Offer little to no Value (Not to mention wasting my time on your shout-outs)
  • Download Waste (White papers, Lame e-books, etc.)
  • Videos that show a rented house, helicopter, etc and no real advice besides buying your 10 week BS course
  • Friends who ask really common questions in order to get responses and show up in my feed with offers
  • and more
The key is to be aware of what marketers are wasting not only your attention but also your time, which both have a tremendous value. As marketers we need to be better and not do "Selfish Marketing", but rather mover towards "Considerate Marketing" which is why I have not unsubscribed from Benihana's even though I have not been in years.

What Drug Dealing Taught me about Business.

8/18/2017

I had the fortune of growing up in the 1980s which was considered the "Crack Era" and we wanted stuff like gold chains, shoes, jeans, starter jackets or anything that made us look like we had some money. When I first got started I was a small time dealer who was getting joints to sell at school, basically enough to buy some Ice Cream and Big Macs (2 for $2.50). I just wanted to make a little change, however there were some key business lessons that I had taken away from my Drug Dealing experiences that can be applied to any business large or small.

Lesson #1
Understand that it will take time to get Good
When you begin anything you will start off a novice, for example I started off selling joints at school at the age of 11, and it was not until I was in my mid 20's that I actually became a wholesaler. I had to come up through the rankings and learn. I lost money, got robbed, got scammed  and even spent a few night in juvenile facilities. In business you will learn how your industry works and like Drug dealing you will experience loss, theft, scams and more. The key is to not give in or give up, had I stopped selling drugs when the first guy I gave credit to didn't pay me back I would not be able to give the lessons I am giving you today.
Lesson #2
Have good relationships with multiple suppliers
When I was in the game suppliers could make or break your business, meaning that if the local plug (supplier) did not like you or was from another neighborhood you would likely pay a higher price or not get anything at all. The same holds true for business, your suppliers are everything to you, from the customer service to the turnaround time of delivering inventory. If your supplier is not responsive to your needs, it would be in your best interest to continue to look for another supplier. In drug dealing the smartest thing to do was to have options, if one supplier felt like they would lose your business to a rival you begin to gain a little more control over that relationship. They key is to stay on deck as we use to say, and if you have only one supplier you are at their mercy.
Lesson #3
Credit Ruins Good Relationships
I remember when some of our customers were low on funds, usually in the middle of the week and towards the end of the month and they would ask for credit until they got paid. The challenge was that we didn't have a credit bureau to report to if and when they didn't pay and you risk going to jail for assault if you try to do them harm. What we also found was that like Lesson #2, we were not their only suppliers and if they did not feel like paying us back they could simply go to the dealers up the street. The lesson we learned was that  even though we think we are helping the relationship by offering them credit, it ultimately makes us a less attractive option. The person could have very good intentions in the beginning, however some people are willing to risk the relationship over the debt.

I am by no means condoning Drug Dealing, however it is part of my past and I embrace the lessons I have learned and transferred those lessons into legitimate business advice. Please subscribe below.
